Who We Are

Showing Life-Changing Hospitality Since 1979

Arriving in a new country is exciting — and sometimes overwhelming.

IFI offers International Students a helping hand, creating a place to belong. Here, kindness and care spark friendships, shape character, and open doors to deeper purpose through the hospitality and love of Jesus.

Over Four Decades of Welcoming the World

In 1979, International Friendships began with a simple conviction: no student should have to navigate life in a new country alone. What started with small acts of hospitality — shared meals, airport rides, conversations over tea — has grown into a movement spanning campuses, cities, and countries.

Ministry Pillars

We welcome international students because God first welcomed us. Our faith in Jesus inspires us to serve, but we know students come from many different backgrounds and beliefs. For that reason, students do not have to believe the same thing we do to participate.

Foundation

Intimacy with Christ and Love for One Another

  1. We value, first and foremost, knowledge and intimacy with Christ as developed through time with Him in the spiritual disciplines, including prayer, meditation, and Bible study. (Psalm 1: 1-3, John 15:5, 1 Tim 4:7-8, Matt 22:37-38)
  2. We value loving each other as an expression of knowing the love of Christ. We do this through practicing the “one another’s” of Scripture. (John 13:33-34, Matt. 22:39, 1 John 3:14-16, Romans 14:19, Romans 15:7, Col. 3:16, Gal. 6:2, Eph. 4:2, Eph. 4:32, 1 Thess. 4:18, James 5:16, Romans 12:10)

Ministry Approach

Hospitality in Partnership with Churches

  1. We value extending true hospitality to internationals by opening our homes to them and living among them with an open life, demonstrating respect, acceptance and appreciation for them and their various cultures. (Heb 13:2)
  2. We value unconditionally loving and serving international students by meeting felt needs and reaching out in genuine friendship. (Lev. 19:34, Deut. 10:18-19, Matt 22:39)
  3. We value resourcing, mobilizing, and partnering with churches and other like-minded parachurch organizations to effectively serve the international student population. (1 Cor. 12:27, Eph. 4:12)

Discipleship Philosophy

Life-Involvement Discipleship as a Process

  1. We value using forms and approaches for ministry to internationals that are culturally relevant and meaningful to the international’s background and consistent with Biblical truth. (1 Cor 9:22, Acts 17:22-23)
  2. We value a life-involvement approach to the whole process of discipleship, imparting truth and Christ-likeness by our example and through the Word of God in the context of genuine, loving relationships. We expect every staff person to be pursuing at least 1 of these relationships. (Matt 28:18-20, Mark 1:17, 2 Cor 4:7, Col 4:4-6)
  3. We value and respect discipleship as a life-long and ongoing process, beginning with evangelism, then discipleship training, and lastly partnership with internationals in ministry, leading to the multiplication of spiritual laborers for God’s glory among the nations. (1 Cor 13:11, 2 Tim 2:2, 1 Pe 2:2)
  4. We value and seek full partnership with internationals in efforts to make Christ known. Wherever possible, we will take a deferential posture in co-leading with international believers in order to equip them to be God’s laborers. (Isaiah 61:3,11)
  5. We value preparing internationals for their post-academic transition and potential move back to their country of origin through specialized conferences, internships, and personal mentoring in their field of study. (Luke 6:40, I Corinthians 9:25)
  6. We value continuing supportive relationships with committed internationals after they return home. (Acts 15:36)

Organizational Philosophy

God-Honoring Stewardship Practices

  1. We value exercising faithful stewardship of the resources God has given us, including people, finances, and time, and we seek to use these gifts with God’s wisdom. (1 Cor. 4:2)
  2. We value excellence, a quality of work that honors God and is pleasing to constituents. (Col 3:23)
  3. We value integrity, operating in a manner that reflects Biblical standards and our stated values, striving to represent ourselves accurately without falsehood or exaggeration and seeking to fulfill what we promise. (Eph 4:25)
  4. We value teamwork, being one in spirit and purpose but functioning interdependently within the body of Christ. (Phil 2:2)
  5. We value investing in the continuing development of staff and volunteers by training them commensurate with their responsibilities. (1 Cor 9:24-25)

An answered prayer

IFI has been God’s answered prayer to me. The first semester was extremely challenging due to all the adjustments I had to make. I soon realized building a community in a different culture wasn’t going to be easy. BUT God. IFI to me has been a place where I get seen, can be myself, meet others going through similar experiences, and learn new cultures.

Thank you IFI!

The IFI team was incredibly generous and helpful, always ready to assist and ensure we felt at home. They helped us with our challenges, from rides to go shopping to getting furniture for our home, and also with the English language itself. Thanks to IFI, we made lasting friendships that we will carry with us for a lifetime.

Extremely Grateful!

Thanks to IFI, I found a community that became family. Moving to a new country and starting at a new school can feel overwhelming, but IFI turned that challenge into an adventure. The warmth, support, and genuine connections made me feel like I belonged, and it wasn’t long before the unfamiliar started feeling like home.

Frequently Asked Questions

Still have questions? Please contact us, we’d love to help.

Who is IFI and how can I get involved?

IFI's mission is to extend life-changing hospitality and friendship to international students out of reverence to Jesus.

International students often struggle with culture shock, stress, and loneliness when leaving their homes to study in the US. International Friendships, Inc. (IFI) is a national organization partnering with local churches, universities, and volunteers to provide life-changing hospitality and friendship to international students. We work strategically to make the world feel at home and extend God’s love globally — right where we are.

IFI is in many locations across the US, and each location offers a variety of activities for students. Popular activities include airport pickup, temporary housing with a local American volunteer, trips across America, group discussions of the Bible, English conversation partners and much more. To learn more about a particular activity, please visit that location's website.

Do I have to be a Christian to join IFI activities?

No. All IFI events are open to international students from any religious or cultural background. All are welcome!

Is there a cost to participate in the ministry's activities?

Most of our activities are free of charge, by volunteers who want to show kindness to international students arriving in the United States. We want to ensure that all international students can participate without financial barriers. However, some special events may have a nominal fee to cover costs. We will always communicate any fees in advance, and we strive to keep costs as low as possible to encourage participation.

Does IFI work with the University's International Student Offices?

While the relationship between IFI and the university will vary from campus to campus, IFI respects the role of university officials engaged in serving international students and scholars. We strive to have a high level of integrity and responsibility in our interactions with university officials and with international students and scholars. We adhere to the NAFSA: Association of International Educators Statement of Ethical Principles in our ministry to international students and scholars.

Should I pay or tip IFI volunteers who pick me up from the airport?

No. These services are free, provided by the Christians who support and volunteer in IFI.
